Operations Associate

About Craft Coffee

Craft Coffee is fundamentally rethinking the way people buy coffee beans. Every year Americans spend $13B buying mostly stale old coffee beans at grocery stores. Craft Coffee uses internet distribution and a subscription model to bring our customers better coffee, delivered conveniently on their schedule, while they continue paying grocery store prices. It's a better way to buy coffee. We're profitable and cashflow positive. Want to learn how to run a real company? Apply today.

The Position

I'm Mike, the founder of Craft Coffee. This isn't a standard job, so I'm not writing a standard job post. Over the past 5 months, I took over our operations and significantly improved everything we do operationally. We've used technology to smartly automate systems, and decreased the number of people required to run our operations from 5 to 1. In this job, you'll be the one person running the tasks that have not been automated. Everything you do will be something that I did before you, and you'll be working with me directly. So there won't be any room for cutting corners or faking it.

We're a small distributed team. It's typical that you'll often be in the office with just a couple people from our fulfillment team, with other team members working remotely and communicating through our team chat system. When fulfillments are happening, we typically have music playing to keep things moving. If you don't work well in this type of environment, this won't be the right place for you.

The core part of this job will fill most of a standard work week with tasks required to keep our business running smoothly. That's the baseline. You can choose to gain as much from this role as you choose, but it will require you taking the initiative to do that. Here are some things you could learn in this role if you choose to: how to use technology to automate complex systems (one of the most valuable skills you can build in our opinion), extremely advanced use of Google Sheets (used like a web application, rather than a traditional spreadsheet), how to efficiently manage an operational business (by automating everything that can possibly be automated), how to run a profitable business, how to buy green coffee from coffee importers, how to run a coffee roasting operation.

Ultimately, long-term success in this role would probably look like you taking the initiative to eliminate your own job, and in doing so, building skills that justify you moving up to a more senior level. Raises would likely come from you taking the lead on identifying and executing on initiatives that concretely save the business money.

The Details

  • You'll be directly responsible for running our existing fulfillment processes, and you'll manage the team of people who work on our production line. This can shift as we optimize systems, but there are currently fulfillment operations happening in our office 4 days per week, and you'd be directly responsible for working with the people doing this work.
  • You'll use our existing systems to:
    • Plan weekly fulfillment processes, and staff the labor required to execute on those plans.
    • Ensure quality control of our roasted coffee.
    • Manage our inventory.
    • Place orders for coffee and correspond with roasters and importers.

Who Should Apply?
This role is about running a profitable operational business. You should be very interested in working in that kind of environment, including managing labor and very competently working with computer systems.

  • You are very smart and a quick study.
  • You have a strong academic record, or a very good reason for why you don't have one (which you must explain in your application).
  • You have previous work experience managing systems and processes in an "applied" environment. There's nothing academic or theoretical about this job. You'll do things that have real world impact every day.
  • You hate inefficiency and can't stop yourself from fixing broken systems.
  • You are a net native. If you're intimidated by technology, you're not going to make the cut. There's nothing cute about being bad at technology when you work at an internet startup.
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills, and excellent logical reasoning and comprehension skills.
  • Professional exposure to sql and spreadsheets is a plus. Whatever your existing skill level with these tools, we'll expect you to adapt to using them extremely quickly.

Why Craft Coffee?

  • Very real responsibility to directly manage systems and processes, and to lead initiatives that impact the success of the company every day.
  • Have you heard about the failing unicorns? We're profitable and not going anywhere. Learn how to build a company from the ground up.
  • Work in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a short walk from the Bedford L stop.
  • Free, endless supply of fresh-roasted coffee!

To Apply

  • Tell us why you want to work in this particular role at Craft Coffee
  • We'll get hundreds of applicants for this position. Why should we pick you?
